One
effective strategy to improve Reading Fluency is 'sounding out words'. The child says each sound in a
word and then say the word. One of best ways to start practicing the
'sounding out' strategy is by using CVC (Consonant Vowel Consonant)
or three letter words. There are many ways to present CVC words to the
students, being flashcards the classic one. However I created the "Bowl
of Little Words" and the students were very motivated to use it. To make
this game I used glass pebbles and pictures cut out from a phonics
workbook answer key.

. This post is also at http://demelloteaching.wordpress.com/2014/06/11/reading-fluency-effective-strategy/

Reading
CVC words quickly, sounding them out quickly, is a great skill to have
during the early stages of literacy development and has a huge impact in
Reading Fluency. And why is this important? Because Reading Fluency has
a big impact in comprehension.

To
read CVC words fast students need to recall letter sounds quickly, so
teaching the sounds of the letters would be a stage prior to sounding
out.
Some
students go quickly through the sounding out phase. The students with
most difficulties are the ones who ‘might’ (please note that I said
might) have learning difficulties, especially if they have difficulties
sounding out words when ‘you’ give them the sounds to blend and form a
word.

Reading CVC words is just one of many strategies to increase Reading Fluency. I will talk about other strategies in other posts.

Grades: preK - KG - First
Objective: Increase Reading Fluency by practicing reading CVC and three letter words.
Possible Activities:
Student will:

Read
one word at a time then turn the glass pebble to look at the picture to
see if the word was read correctly. Students can take turns reading the
words.

Get a handful of pebbles and read the words to a friend.

Make pairs of words that go together. (classification)

Make sets of two or more words that belong to the same 'word family' (AT - EN - OX for example)

Use two or more words to create a sentence. Orally or in written form.

Use two or more words to create a story. Orally or in written form.

Other:

Teacher
will show a word for a few seconds to the student. The student then
says the word and then the teacher gives the student the pebble to look
at the picture to confirm or self-correct.

Note: model the activity you chose before asking the student to do it.
Materials needed to make this game (or center):

'Answer key' pages of any workbook as the pictures are usually very small or wherever you can find small pictures

Glass pebbles (preferable opaque)

Marker that writes on glass (found at Michaels or JoAnn)

Mod Podge or Elmer's glue

If possible involve the students in making the game. It makes it more meaningful to them.

Another big hit with the children was the addition of a fish in the " Little Word Bowl".

The activities are the same as described above but 'the fish' is the one
reading the words. As the fish reads the words the child turns the
pebble to reveal the picture.

Karel Appel is a fantastic Dutch artist. I came across his work when researching about Dutch artists as I had Dutch students in my class. I was doing an art unit and wanted every student to see the work of at least four different artists of their nationality. I had 12 different nationalities represented in my class and that was fascinating. Well, it was an international school after all. I was lucky that the art teacher already had lots (really a lot) of prints of most of the artists. Some were just postcards that the teacher had from her own collection. Now guess what I buy when I go to an art museum?

This post is also at my new blog http://demelloteaching.wordpress.com/2014/06/11/wood-artwork-inspired-by-karel-appel/

The minute I saw Karel Appel's work I fell in love with it. I loved the themes, the colors, the textures and how they made me think about the superficiality of the western society I live. Of course I did some reading about the meaning of his work.

Here is a link to Karel Appel Foundation where you can see many of his works. You can use this link to show his work to the students.

I made a Power Point presentation of his artwork and showed it to the kids to recently launch a mini art unit dedicated to Appel. In another school, where I did a a five weeks Art Unit, Karel Appel was one of four Dutch artists I introduced to the students.

Karel Appel painted inspired by children and now the children painted inspired by him.

The work we got inspired by is called 'Questioning Children'. It's made out of scraps of wood on a wooden base. The title in Dutch is 'Vragende Kinderen' and vragende means questioning but also begging, which makes you wonder. The Dutch title gives a more profound meaning to the artwork. Actually Appel painted three 'Vragende Kinderen' and below are two of them.

The wooden boards we used were roughly 21 x 21 inches. All the wood we used were scraps including the board bases.

We used acrylic paint and if you decide to do the same make sure the room is well ventilated. If using tempera I suggest you mix white glue to it so it won't peel off and the colors will be more vivid. I drill holes on the top corners and attached ribbons so the students have the option to hang their paintings at home.

Here are some of the most recent artwork created by my 5 and 6 year old students. They had to name their painting, measure them, talk about the process and medium they used.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Young children love to do collage and a great medium is just a bunch
of colored sticks and colorful cardboard.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">As a provocation you can leave colored paper, colored sticks, and glue on a table, as an invitation for them to explore the materials and create artwork.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">This is a good provocation for units related to art appreciation / role of art in our lives / how we can express ourselves.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Questions:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Can you create artwork with sticks and paper?

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">How do sticks feel in your hands?

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">What do you want people to feel when they see your artwork?

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">After the children explore these materials you can add others suggested by the kids. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Children should have the freedom to choose what they want to use to create art.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I might also ask the group to decide on the materials and the children should come to an agreement about what materials would be available to promote negotiation, collaboration and group decision making.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">This is an easy project to do at home. You can use any type of sticks, from toothpicks
to small twigs collected in your garden or nearby park.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We explored different gluing techniques. The technique they all chose was to dip the tip of a stick in
the glue and place it on the paper. This was the best way to avoid sticky
fingers. The students could concentrate on their creation and not in trying to get sticks stuck on their fingers.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Below are samples of artworks created by some of my 3 and 4 year old students. They
were free to do this project as many times they wanted and to return to
the same project until they were happy with the results.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I
was happy to see that the students created such different pieces even though they were using the same materials.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I have used these same materials to create collaborative work in large poster paper. The process and products were equally fun and beautiful.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Below are sample works from children with ages 3 to 5 years old.

One of the activities I like to do about shapes is to ask my
students if they can represent themselves with shapes. They are invited to reflect upon shapes in our bodies and after we decided which shapes we would use they create a ‘shape friend’ using pre-cut colored shapes. The students
can create their ‘shape friend’ any way they want. After we discuss which shapes are in the human body I pre-cut the shapes as they are 3 and 4 years old and cutting is not my goal for this learning experience. Hands can be squares, triangles, or
circles, bodies can be rectangles or triangles, they can use yarn or shredded
paper for hair and so on. The folded rectangles for legs was my suggestions as the students previously showed interest in folding strips of paper.

Questions:

How can we use shapes to describe things?

Does it help describing things if we know the names of the shapes?

Which shapes do we see in our bodies?

Can we represent/make a body using only geometric shapes?

After
they create their ‘shape friends’ they have to share
their work with the group, which they are really eager to do. I did half
of the class in one day and the other half on another day as it was a
big group. They had to
say how many of each shape they used. They were free to add any other
information like the name of the shape friend, if it was a boy or a
girl, what
was their favorite thing to do and anything they wanted to say about
their shape friend.

Besides
talking about each shape friend individually we also did comparisons. I
paired the students and they had to find out what was the same and
different between their shape friends, between their use of shapes to represent a human body. I first modeled the activity to
the group. Pairing students to talk about something is a great way to
develop language specially if you have EAL students in your class as
well as to create bonds between students.

I like the accordion arms and legs as it requires the students to use their fine motor skills.

One of the students said ‘we can also write how many shapes we used’ so I created a simple worksheet, which was optional for them to complete.

Another fun project we did this year was painting using cups.

I initially asked what were cups for. Nobody guessed it was for painting and then I asked if we could use cups to paint. The answers were varied and one student said we could do like stamps.

I set it up by putting paint on plastic plates and paper cups in them (recycled from a b-day party).

The size of the plates was really ideal for the cups.

We used 5 colors voted by the group. I started by placing a paper under each plate and cup. Then the children could choose a color to start.

The students began using one color and when they were happy with the results they could go to another color. The paper plates stayed in the same place. The students moved to the color they wanted taking their paper with them.

The book is by Bill Martin Jr. with pictures by Eric Carl. It is magical, beautiful, musical, catchy, and you can read it, sing it and act it out. First and second graders can also get inspired by the book and do a variety of activities including writing their own book using the same format of Brown Bear Brown Bear.

In my PreK class I used this book during Shared Reading and we ended up doing a read along of it. I posted in youtube as there are no visuals of the children just their voices and it is a read along version.

I began using Garage Band but could not get pass the 'sharing the file' stage so I ended up using iMovie as I am more familiar with the program and the file is saved on an m4v format, which is one of the formats Youtube allows for uploads. I also uploaded on Vimeo.

In exploring the classroom to find unusual painting tools we decided to try 'spools' that are part of the 'Laces and Beads' box. We found out that they make interesting prints.

Questions:

Do painters only use paintbrushes to create their artwork?

What are things they might use?

What can we use as a painting tool other than paint brushes?

If I tell you we can use only one color paint and paper, how would we decide which colors to use?

Can we create different artworks if we all use the same color paint and paper?

What makes your work unique even though you used the same colors and materials as your friend?

The group decided to use black paint and orange paper. It was interesting to observe that once the colors were voted, they all worked without complaining that they were not their favorite color. After all the paintings were ready, we place them all together on a big table to dry. The children talked about what they liked about their friends work. They also talked about similarities and differences.

Sometimes it takes one good tip from another teacher to change our way of presenting a project to our students. In reading the post from Sally's fabulous blog "Fairy Dust Teaching" about Georgia O'Keefe I solved a problem on how to present the 'poppies' project to my students. I never knew how to emphasize that the flowers Georgia painted were BIG. Big for preschoolers can be relative. Then I read in Sally's post that Georgia painted the flowers so big that they would reach the edges of the paper. Those were the magic words i needed! Thanks Sally!

Here is how I did it:
I showed a power point of Georgia's flowers and poppies to the students for inspiration.
When looking at the flowers I asked many questions and among them how big the flowers were. The students said, "veeery big" and the discussion went on until together we noticed that the flowers were so big that they touched the sides of the paper. That was the missing ingredient for the project. Thanks Sally!

The students really got into the project and painted their poppies really big. They were fascinated by it.

The group decided to use warm colors because they wanted people to feel happy and excited when looking at our artwork. Some students requested black for the middle as they remember from O'Keefe's flowers. We used paintbrushes and regular A4 paper cut in an almost square shape. Most of the children naturally started by drawing the center of the flowers and then the petals.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The One Line Design lesson that I do based on a lesson from MaryAnn Kohl's book "Discovering the Great Artists" is one of my favorite art lessons.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I show a Power Point about Paul Klee's artwork, which you can download by clicking on the title below. I have already posted about it before in a post called Art Appreciation using Technology.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">PAUL KLEE POWER POINT

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Questions:

What does Paul Klee art make you think about? Feel?

What do you like about his work?

Which painting was your favorite? Why?

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I stopped the power point so we could discuss the paintings. I noted the wonderings they had. After they saw the whole power point I went back to "Dramatic Landscape" painting and mention that someone said he liked the lines in the painting and could see parts of shapes but no pictures. I asked them to wonder how Kandinsky created that painting. Then I outlined the Dramatic Landscape painting that was projected on the white board. I turned off the computer and projector and the kids saw the lines I had traced. I colored a few of the spaces created by the lines with colored white board markers. I asked the children to tell me if they could create an artwork inspired by Kandinsky using permanent markers and paint, similar to what I did on the board.

I told the students that some art teachers call that technique the 'one line design' because we start a line and go on and on until we are happy with the design. At this point we have already discussed that abstract art does not need to have a person or objects in it. Colors, forms and shapes are good enough.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I do not live in the 'Land of Sharpies' so I give regular permanent markers for the kids to do the lines. The thicker the better. The 'chisel tip' markers are not very good for this kind of work as you want thick lines but they were the only ones we had available so I had to show the students how to use them.

What better place to explore capacity than a sandbox? I'm fortunate to have a large sandbox at my school. First we all sat around the sandbox and we made all kinds of inquiries. I carried out all the explorations as the children watched. I did it in a very excited manner to fire them up, so by the time I finished they were all very eager to try it themselves. They could then work in paris or independently. I believe a teacher's genuine enthusiasm is key to motivating students.

We are exploring art mediums to express ourselves. We explored paintings and sculptures thought books, internet and by observing some of artwork I brought from home (two paintings and a sculpture). I asked the children about the uses of newspaper and if they could be used to create art. They said no. Then and I showed the students how to make a newspaper roll. Then I asked the students if newspaper rolls could be used to make artwork. It did not take long until one child said that we could stick the newspaper rolls together.

Questions:

Why do people make art?

How are paintings and sculptures different?

Do sculptures need to represent a person, animal, or thing?

Making the newspaper sculpture was a lot of fun. Rolling the pages diagonally is the best way to make tubes. I asked the children to try a few techniques and test their how strong they were. The ones rolled diagonally were voted the best. This rolling is not very easy for the young children and they might need some help.

We also tried to imagine how the sculpture would look like when finished.

I let older children do it by themselves. By trial and error they ended up figuring out that they needed to hold the tube tight otherwise it will unroll. You will probably need to help the child tape the tube.

With the 3's and some of the 4's I had to keep my hands on the newspaper so it would not unroll but the child was the one doing the movement to roll it.

We worked on a table and on the carpet alternatively. I would move the sculpture from one place to another according to students' requests.

After they worked a lot the children declared it was ready, but on the following day I got a few requests to add more tubes. Why not?

Questions:

What was it easy and difficult about this collaborative artwork?

Was it easy to work with friends?

Did you learn anything with this experience?

Fantastically fun!

I use this assessment with PreK and KG students 3 times a year. At the beginning (after a few weeks of school), middle (usually December or January) and end.

You color code according to the date so you and the students are able to see their progress. Give the child about 5 seconds to read the word then move to the next. young children usually sound out the words, which means they say each sound and then say the word.

At the beginning preK I do not expect the children to read any of the words but as the year goes on we begin to see progress. At the end of the school year I expect them to be able to read most of the words independently by slowly sounding them out.

At the beginning of Kindergarten some children might not be able to read any of the words but they usually progress fast and by the end of the school year I expect them to read all the words accurately and in less than 4 seconds by sounding them out loud or internally.
I made a Power Point Presentation for my students about Paul
Klee’s works, to introduce the ‘one line design’ concept to them. The Power
Point included the “Dramatic Landscape”, which is one of Klee’s paintings that
better exemplifies the abstract one line design. The Power Point was on the
desktop of one of my classroom computers and right after I projected it on the
white board, wanted to sit at the computer and watch it again. Today students
were still asking to watch the presentation.

Connections! Learning taking place! Applied knowledge! Isn't
that what all teacher want to see happening with their students? Here is one
example from last week.

Early in the morning many students were using beads and
laces to make chains. They would do and undo them until two students said they
wanted to share what they had done.

One of the girls began to talk about her chain and she said she used a bead like the cube we have in our 3D shapes box. Then she showed the cylinder-shaped and sphere-shaped beads. One of the boys also made a chain and made all the connections with the shapes we have been exploring. He also noted his chain was longer than the girl’s chain, and they began comparing who used more cylinders.

From this day, on almost every day we’ve had someone making a chain and asking to share with the group. The end result is that the students found a way to review 3D shapes with something they were interested in; thus the initiative came from them and not from the teacher.

This week a girl called me to show she found the 'primary colors' in the beads.

I had also done a “shape hunt’ around the classroom and other relevant activities such as comparing shapes properties, which ones can roll, etc, but to me the best learning experience are the ones initiated by the children.

I use the word “connection” often and frequently ask them to draw parallels with past learning. It is wonderful to see this becoming established in the student’s minds.

I never ceases to amaze me how children are so ready and eager to absorb knowledge. As Maria Montessori used to say: "Children are like sponges absorbing everything around them. They have absorbent minds”.
